Position: Part-Time Reference Assistant I

Under general supervision, oversees reference desk and
responsibilities associated with the position including answering
patron questions about library collection, GALILEO, and
computer troubleshooting. Assists patrons of all ages, including
after school students, with research. The successful candidate
may be required to assist at other branches as needed.

Schedule/Shifts

  • This position is part-time.
  • This position is 15 hours per week.
    Up to 19 hours per week potential.
  • This position requires some evening and weekend hours.

Shift Availability

  • This position requires availability to work when the Library is open
    Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
    Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM
    Saturdays, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

The successful candidate will work closely with their direct supervisor to create their final working schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent and knowledge of library automation and computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications
(In addition to the minimum qualifications)

  • Prior library experience strongly preferred.
  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a public library, including knowledge of reference materials and online databases.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including proficiency in office applications, including Microsoft Office and open source equivalents.

Physical Demands

  • The employee occasionally lifts or moves objects of light to medium weight, up to 25 pounds.
  • The ability to speak clearly, hear, and understand at a normal conversational level is required.
  • Work is typically performed in an office environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings.
  • Full range of hand and finger motion is required for data entry purposes.

Salary/Benefits

  • Starting Pay: $8.50 per hour

Applicants are to be conscientious of the schedule for the position(s) for which they are applying. We suggest that job candidates arrive at least 10 minutes prior to their interview time and plan for about an hour to complete the interview process. Job candidates may be required to take a series of skills assessments dependent on the job they are being considered/interviewed for. This can involve putting books in order and aptitude assessments. All new hires are required to obtain a criminal background check prior to their first day of work. This expense is reimbursed by the System.
